Who can receive meals?
Homebound seniors 60 years and older and others with limited mobility who are unable to cook for themselves and have no one to cook for them are eligible for Meals on Wheels. Spouses who act as caretakers may also receive meals. Depending on client need, meal delivery can be arranged on a short-or long-term basis. Seniors who are permanently disabled or very frail may receive meals on an ongoing basis.
What comes in a meal?
Menus are carefully created by a registered dietitian to ensure they meet recommended daily nutrition allowances. Entrees are varied, and all meals feature bread, 2 servings of vegetables and/or fruit, dessert and an 8oz. serving of 1% low fat milk. Menus are provided to clients at the beginning of each month.
How and when are the meals delivered?
The meals are delivered between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. by caring MOW staff or community volunteers. The daily delivery of a healthy meal in combination with a safety check allows many seniors to remain independent in their own homes.
How do I apply to receive meals?
Please contact either Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels at 716-366-8822 or NY Connects 716-753-4582. After you apply our Outreach Coordinator Margo Perrello will arrange to meet with you. If you meet eligibility criteria, meal delivery can begin in as few as 1-2 business days.
